Volunteer
There are plenty of ways to get involved with the Chuckanut Center! We are working to grow our community of backyard gardeners, educators, urban homesteaders, preservers, musicians and skill builders and there’s so much to share and do! Take a look at some possibilities and fill out the form at the end of the page if something sounds interesting to you.
GARDEN VOLUNTEERS
During the growing season our garden volunteers meet every Thursdays from 4-7pm to do general garden tasks like weeding, mulching, pruning, perennial clean up, planting garden beds, dividing and potting plants and other similar chores. On the first Saturday of the month from June-October we’ll feed you during our monthly “Weed and Feed” parties when we take on larger jobs. The Weed and Feed parties are 9-noon.
During the ‘off season’ volunteers might help with general garden maintenance, mulching, winterizing or specific projects.
ORCHARD
We have an orchard with a variety of apples, pears and assorted stone fruits of varied age. The trees need some annual pruning, summer watering and critter damage control. There are opportunities to work on special orchard projects. We need someone to manage the care of our lovely orchard and work to get our trees producing to their fullest, for we do love our apple cider.
CARETAKERS HOUSE CREW
Our little red house needs a hand keeping youthful. Some basic maintenance skills are helpful and we’ll match your skills to a project.
Projects have included: building an accessible ramp, painting, refinishing floors, winterizing, carpentry and construction and special projects.
Committee Leadership
Sometimes we have a bigger project or ongoing need and we appreciate a volunteer with a higher leadership role. Here are a couple examples of committees that we’d like to see formed, but we’re open to ideas!
VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR (Currently filled)
We need someone to rally the troops, schedule volunteer work parties, work with the board to prioritize projects, communicate with volunteers and provide leadership. Expect to spend 5+ hours a week emailing and leading volunteers during hands on projects.
GARDEN COORDINATOR (Currently filled)
In the growing months we have a dozen community gardeners, garden projects and maintenance that needs a consistent eye. If you love to garden, are interested in doing demonstrations and new garden techniques, are confident communicator, then consider being our garden coordinator. Expect to spend 8+ hours a week in this role.
FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
As a non-profit, fundraising is a part of the necessary package. We have lots of ideas for fundraising events, dinners, campaigns and more and would love some folks to lead the charge. This is more of a team role, perfect for those who love to throw a party or write letters.
